Back to ToolRepairs
To make a new idler shaft I had to first make a temporary shaft on my mini lathe.
The mini lathe couldn't handle the shaft in one long pass so I had to do one end, then flip it and do the other end.
That tends to make the two ends out of balance but it worked long enough to use in the big lathe.
I used the big lathe with temp shaft to make its own final replacment.
The smoke was from a bad habit I have of using motor oil as coolant and not bothering to sharpen the cutter for ruff cuts.
It never was much of a problem with the mini lathe but now I have a tool grinder next to the big lathe.
Cutting the keyway slots.
I have a drill press with milling table but no autofeed so it takes a long time of slowly turning the dials.
The broken casting welded and ground.
