Central Texas Engineers Week at Boone Elementary School
* Event: Central Texas Engineers Week
* Date: Wednesday March 5, Thursday March 6 and Friday March 7
* Time: Varies throughout the day
* Location: Boone Elementary School, 8101 Croftwood Rd, Austin, Texas 78749
* Description: I would like to take a moment to recognize a couple of people who went way above and beyond the call of duty in the community outreach area. When the Robot Group was asked to participate in the Central Texas Engineers Week, 2 men stepped up and offered to do a presentation at a local elementary school. Well, a presentation turned into 12 presentations for 3 teachers over 3 days and involved over 250 students! Derek Bridges and Ed Gonzalez presented a simple hands-on project that involved building a potato battery and lighting up a small LED. They sliced and diced and talked and taught: second, fourth, and fifth graders at Boone Elementary a little something about batteries, electricity and engineering. These students will take those ideas with them for a very long time. Who knows, maybe they inspired a future roboticist?
So the next time you see Derek or Ed, be sure to thank them. They did a real service to the community and to the future.
